The Best Tagalog Songs of 2014*

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Exhausting every kind of ‘best of’ list there is what we, at Vandals On The Wall (and I’m sure many others as well), have been doing since last week and it’s no joke trimming down the massive output that this year has churned out from our local artists (not that we’re complaining – I personally found it as a treasure trove of last-minute discoveries). Which means I have another list somewhere for my top foreign albums, music videos, and singles somewhere (I don’t). But my brain is too fried to do that. Instead, I’ve been doing a different kind of roundup of this spankin’ year – much more personal and more of a form of my own gratitude towards music. But that’s another story.

However, I cannot resist to pass up on the opportunity to list down my favorite songs this year that were written in the vernacular. As a writer myself, it is, by all means, no easy feat to write anything that remotely resembles poetry in Tagalog. It either works or it doesn’t. There’s something intuitive and even exceptionally romantic about our own language that’s quite different from the others, like English. It feels like every syllable throbs, or sometimes, bleeds, through each melody. At the height of our emotions, it’s harder to smokescreen what you wanted to say when you say it in our native tongue. It is what it is. Every word has a reverb. And sometimes, it peals its way to your consciousness and leaves an echo, constantly repeating itself to retention.

Here are ten songs that made the strongest impression and left a mark on me this year. They are constant reminders of how beautiful it is to live, love, hurt, cry, laugh, and feel through words, stringing them together, until they form a knot with your own heart, tugging it at your most vulnerable moments.

(This list is unranked.)

1. Autotelic – Dalhin

Kanino ka natatakot?

Sa akin ba o sa kanila?

Muli ka na namang nakasimangot

Hindi naman ako pansamantala, pansamantala

Hindi na tayo katulad nang dati

Nakaahon na mula sa lalim ng panahon

Hawakan mo ang aking kamay

Sabay tayong magiging malaya

2. Bullet Dumas – Tugtog

Simple lang akong mangarap

Ngunit kabilang ka sa mga pangarap

Paumanhin, paumanhin

Ang nabanggit ay totoo

Medyo bano ako umilag

Kaya nalanghap iyong halimuyak

Panaginip, ikaw ang panaginip ko ngayon

Puso mo ang puno’t dulo ko

3. Clara Benin – Araw’t Gabi

Sabik na sabik na ako sa mga ‘di mo sinasabi

Araw at gabi

O kay sakit, masakit talaga ang magmahal

‘Pag alam mo’ng mahal nya’y naglaho na

Araw at gabi

Ikaw ang ninanais

Ng puso kong ngayon lang nagising

4. Eraserheads – Sabado

Ang pagpanaw ng araw

At paglalim ng dilim

Ang oras na lumipas

‘Di na natin maibabalik

Itapon ang kahapon

Yakapin ang darating

At kung kailangan mo ako

Lagi naman akong nandito

5. Maude – Takda

Ang pagmamahal nga ba’y naghihintay

Hindi ba’t tulad nating tumatanda’t namamatay

Minsan lang, minsan pa

Subukan ang tadhana

Kung ‘wag na lang, o tayo ba

Ang takda

6. Peryodiko – Tayo Lang Ang May Alam

Tayo lang ang nakakaalam

Nandon sa pagitan ng paalam at pahiram

Tayo lang ang may alam

Tayo lang

Sige lang

‘Di mo naman kailangan pang magpaliwanag

Andyan ako, andito kayo

Sa pagitan ng mga mundo

‘Di nya mapapansin

Kung saan ka nakatingin

Abot kamay

Abot tanaw

Pero ‘di makagalaw

7. The Purplechickens – Dayami

Ikaw lang ang makapagsasabi

Ng alamat na kay tagal hinabi

Kay tagal hinabi

Sa dulo may mahuhulog

Masusunog ang dayami

May makakatulog

Ang lahat ng iyong ginawang karimarimarim

Ay hindi mo na maaari pang ulitin

8. Sarah Geronimo – Kilometro

Tila tala sa tala ang layo

At di ka na matanaw

Pero pag humahaba ay lalo kitang sinisigaw

Maging ang laot walang takot na tawirin

Kahit alon ay umabot sa papawirin

San man dako’y pinangakong makakarating

Ikaw lang ay makapiling

9. Shirebound and Busking – Waltz of Four Left Feet

Hindi ko naman yata ikamamatay

Kung hindi ko mahawakan ang iyong kamay

Handa ‘kong mabuhay sa ‘king kalokohan

Kung wala ka

Sa aking buhay

Walang kalungkutan

Hindi ko yata tanggap ang buhay

Kung saan ‘di ko mahawakan

Ang iyong kamay

Handa ‘kong harapin

Kawalang katiyakan

Kahit na takot sa maaring kasagutan

*I’d leave it at this.
